Resources

Greetings,

If you feel strongly one way or another about individuals or groups I have links to, let me know (nicely if at all possible).  If I have included a link to you and you would rather I not, of course let me know that too.  Also let me know if a link/url is no longer functioning.  I hope to develop this section more as time permits.  Thank you.

Earth Healing: San Francisco Bay Area

"Save The Bay is the oldest and largest organization working exclusively to protect, restore and celebrate San Francisco Bay." www.savesfbay.org They are also helping to manifest a great television series:  http://savingthebay.net/  This organization has done tremendous good for the land and waters here in the Bay Area.

Santa Clara County Creeks Coalition is doing great work here in my area and throughout the South Bay.  They organize an annual creeks conference and their Program Director Richard McMurty is a great speaker on behalf of the creeks. www.sccreeks.org

The Midpeninsula Open Space District has permanently preserved over 57,000 acres of mountainous, foothill, and bayland open space, creating 26 open space preserves (24 of which are open to the public). www.openspace.org  They also helped move Mt. Umunhum into public ownership; however, "there is no public access to the top of Mt. Umunhum due to toxic contaminants, physical hazards, and intervening private property. The District is working with the federal government toward a cleanup of the site, and intends to eventually restore the area to a more natural condition that is suitable for public access". May that work proceed well.

"Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition is a diverse organization engaged in research, advocacy and grassroots organizing to promote human health and environmental justice in response to the rapid growth of the high-tech industry." Check out their Silicon Valley Toxics Tour.  Did you know that we have a higher concentration of EPA-identified toxic superfund sites in the South Bay than anywhere else in the United States? http://www.etoxics.org/

San Bruno Mountain Watch has vigilantly cared for what is now San Bruno Mountain State Park and the surrounding areas still under threat of development. This includes advocating for endangered species on the mountain, helping to protect Native shellmounds, and teaching people to love and care for the land there. www.mountainwatch.org

The Salmon Protection and Watershed Network works for the wellbeing of the critically endangered Salmon of California: www.spawnusa.org

The Center for Biological Diversity based originally out of New Mexico has expanded and is doing fantastic work to protect endangered relatives (both plant and animal) including in the San Francisco Bay Area. Check out their extensive staff and job openings; right livelihood for sure. www.biologicaldiversity.org/campaigns/golden_state_biodiversity_initiative/index.html

Bay Nature has a great magazine and is up to many other kinds of other goodness in the area. www.baynature.com

Save Mount Diablo "has been instrumental in increasing open space on and around the mountain from 6,788 acres to more than 89,000 acres". Wonderful.   www.savemountdiablo

Yerba Buena Nursery is west of Palo Alto near Skyline, up in the hills.  This makes a great day outing for native plant lovers. www.yerbabuenanursery.com

California Native Plant Society has a few different chapters in the Bay Area and is obviously a strong advocate for our green-blooded relatives. www.cnps.org

Ancestors, Genealogy, Home Funerals, and Green Burials

www.rootsweb.ancestry.com

I've had good results with selecting Metasearch then WorldConnect then doing Advanced Searches.  And it's free.

www.familysearch.org

Another free search engine I've found helpful. This is "An official Web site of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints".  Thanks Mormon folk for sharing all this freely.

www.myheritage.com

Provides free software and connections to other kinds of free searches although it's a bit more involved.  If you want to organize your research online or share it, this is a great tool.

www.thresholdsoflife.org

Although I don't know the web host personally, Nora's site is a wonderful collection of resources for those wanting to do something other than the conventional funeral/burial process.  A great resource for getting educated about green burials, home funerals, etc.

Research

For those interested in the relationship of diverse types of shamanic healing practices with Western psychology and clinical mental health, here is my recently completed dissertation.  Sure, it's academic in tone and I'm singing my own praises by posting it here, but anyays it hopefully conveys some relevant concerns for clinicians thinking to blend shamanic healing ways with their psychotherapy practice (it can totally be done in a good way!):
